Discussion Board

1. What are the similarities and differences between the California Indian stories you read for Week 1? What do these similarities and differences reveal about the similarities and differences between the environments and customs of the peoples who told them?

2. What do the California Indian stories reveal about the attitudes of the peoples who told them? What, for example, is their attitude toward animals? Human beings? The earth? The sun? Water? etc. What do the excerpts we read for this week, by the explorers and settlers, reveal about their attitudes? How do the attitudes and ideas of the two groups differ?

3. How are the California Indian stories similar to or different from the creation stories from your own culture?

"California is like an artificial limb the rest of the country doesn't really need. You can quote me on that."
~ Saul Bellow
