1. At the end of "Moxon's Master," the narrator says, "That was many years ago. If asked to-day I should answer less confidently." What does he mean?

2. In "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County," why does Twain create a narrator to frame the action? That is, why have a narrator tell us about hearing the story from another man? Why not just make Wheeler the narrator?

3. In "The Outcasts of Poker Flat," what is Harte saying about guilt and redemption?

The whole city (Los Angeles) gives you the impression of impermanence. You have the feeling that one day someone is going to yell. "Cut! Strike it!" and then the stagehands will scurry out and remove the mountains, the movie-star homes, the Hollywood Bowl - everything.
